The MNP Outreach Program, an initiative from the KiTZ, stands at the forefront of revolutionary advancements in cancer diagnosis, offering hope and precision medicine to patients worldwide. At its core is the "Heidelberg Tumor Classifier" an algorithm that significantly improves the accuracy of diagnosing brain tumors and sarcoma through advanced molecular diagnostics.

The Challenge

Brain tumors and sarcoma are two leading causes of cancer deaths in children, and their diagnosis is exceptionally challenging due to their heterogeneity and rarity. Traditional diagnostic methods often fall short, leading to delayed or incorrect treatments. This is where the MNP Outreach Program makes a monumental difference.

 

 

Our Solution 

Developed by a dedicated team at KiTZ, the Heidelberg Brain Tumor Classifier uses machine learning to analyze the molecular fingerprint of tumors, allowing for precise classification. This tool, initially focused on central nervous system tumors, now also aids in the diagnosis of sarcomas, another critical pediatric cancer type.

Global Impact

Since its launch in 2016, the MNP platform has processed over 150,000 tumor samples from more than 40 countries and 400 institutions (Figure 1). The platform's effectiveness has led to the integration of its methodologies into the WHO classification of brain tumors, directly benefiting over 44,000 children and 290,000 adults annually.

Expanding Access

To ensure these life-saving diagnostics reach patients in low and middle-income countries, the MNP Outreach Consortium was established. Partners from countries including Egypt, India, Brazil, and more, are now equipped with the tools and training needed to apply these advanced diagnostic techniques locally (Figure 2).
